Darkness

1) What is the lyrical content of the song?  What do the lyrics say and/or do they tell a story?:

(Paint the black hole blacker)
(Paint the black hole blacker)
I swear to tell the truth
(Paint the black-hole blacker)
The whole truth and nothing but

(Paint the black-hole blacker)
(Paint the black-hole blacker)
Yes
(Paint the black-hole blacker)

Hey, I am the maniac, I am the ghoul
I'm in the shadows in the corners of my room
This my new hideaway, this is my tomb
This is my coffin, this is my place for unruliness, no worries

I love the darkness, yeah, I'd like to marry it
It is my cloak, it is my shield, it is my cape
I love the dark, maybe we can make it darker
Give me a marker

I am a maniac
I am a maniac
I am a maniac

I am the maniac, I am the fool
I found a monster in me when I lost my cool
It lives inside of me eating what's in its way
I put black spray paint on my windows during the day

I want to spend time with it, I think I'm losing it
Or I found it and I'm using it
I wear my shades at night so I can look in the abyss
I see something in nothingness if you could picture this

Put black holes in my jar lid
I'll climb the wall, I'm too high now, I'd die from the fall
Before the water is to our knees, we can't climb when the trees
Wash away, you and I are the disease

I am a maniac
I am a maniac
I am a maniac
I am the maniac

I am the maniac
I am the maniac
I am the maniac
I am the maniac

2) What is the mood of the song?  Does it make you happy, sad, want to dance, or anything?: It makes me feel like i'm cool in a bad way.

3) Introduce the artist or artists on the song and tell us about them.: Kid Cudi and Cage. Scott Mescudi, born January 30, 1984, better known by his stage name Kid Cudi. Kid Cudi is an American hip-hop recording artist and actor from Cleveland, Ohio. A rapper, singer-songwriter, guitarist and record producer, Kid Cudi is signed under Republic Records, as well as his own imprint, Wicked Awesome Records. He first gained recognition after the release of his first official full-length project, a mixtape titled A Kid Named Cudi (2008). The mixtape caught the attention of American record executive and rapper-producer Kanye West, who subsequently signed Cudi to his GOOD Music label, in late 2008. Cudi's association with Kanye West and the GOOD Music label, as well as his breakout single "Day 'n' Nite", led him to prominence. Chris Palko (born 1973), better known by his stage name Cage, is a American hip hop recording artist from Middletown, Orange County, New York. Cage is perhaps best known for his work under the labels Definitive Jux and Eastern Conference, as well as his 2002 debut studio album Movies for the Blind. Since his debut he has released three albums, two compilation albums and two extended plays. Cage is the founder of the underground hip hop supergroup The Weathermen, formed in 1999. He also established a group called Smut Peddlers, with The High & Mighty, publishing an album titled Porn Again, in 2001.

4) Does the song contain samples?  Go to whosampled.com and look up the song.  If there is at least one sample, say what it is and post the song below.: The Strangers by St. Vincent

5) How is this song relevant to you?  How do your experiences relate to the song's story, lyrics and mood?: It's relavent to me because the song is my type of style. It's clean, cool and it sounds evil. The song is like a evil type song. I most of the time think negative so it relates to how negative i am. I honestly hate the light in day time and i love the dark. This song mostly talks about darkness which makes me like the song even more.

Hi Julian,

Very thorough analysis of the song "Darkness!" I'm surprised this makes you feel "cool in a bad way" because this song depresses me! But if you consider yourself a negative person and hate the light in daytime then I can see why you would like this song! I appreciate that the lyrics are clean : )

I can see now the title is "Maniac"

Hi Julian, when I first commented on your blog I couldn't see the video because my school computer blocked it. From now on I will be commenting from home.

" It's clean, cool and it sounds evil."

That says it all!  This song has an interesting use of a contemporary sample.  Have you checked out any other St. Vincent songs?

For some reason, the only thing I can imagine after playing this song is:

Clean, cool & evil(?)!
